The mineral rich volcanic soil from volcanic eruptions millennia ago provides the base for fruit trees that now form a carpet that ascends from the valley floor to the slopes of the upper valley. In the spring, billions of pink-white blossoms begin in the lower elevations and continue upward through the valley as the bloom is coaxed by warmth to the higher elevations. Tourists from around the world come to see the annual show of mile upon mile of fruit trees in bloom, but those who live here take a different view of the bloom: It is a promise of fruit to come, and fruit is the life of the Valley. It can be fairly stated that nowhere is more superb fruit grown. The yearly parade of cherries and pears from the Hood River Valley are known throughout the world. Diamond Fruit Growers is a cooperative representing more than one-hundred fruit orchardists farming more than six-thousand acres of orchards located within the Hood River Valley. Collectively these growers produce more than fifty-five thousand tons of fresh pears annually making Diamond Fruit Growers the largest supplier of pears in the United States. Formed in 1913, Diamond is also one of the oldest cooperatives in the country.
